Upload is when you are sending files upstream from you to the Internet, and download is when you are bringing files from the Internet to you.  Upload is used less frequently by most users and includes sending emails, sending YouTube content, ora video call.  Downloading is the bulk of Internet usage and includes browsing the web, listening to music, watching videos and streaming movies.
